Special Care Community
Sharon Lane Health Service’s Special Care Community, designed with individuals that are managing aggressive cognitive deficits either from Alzheimer’s or late-stage Dementia, creates a calm and secure environment where quality of life and dignity are a high priority.
Our caring staff is dedicated to our residents maintaining their highest level of independence, both physically and socially. In addition to a secure, outdoor courtyard, a full-time activity assistant provides therapeutic activities for residents seven days a week. Also, our social service department provides for the resident’s psychological / emotional needs, as well as assisting and supporting the family and friends with their own personal journey through their loved one’s disease process.
All staff members are required to attend a training program before assignment to work in this community. Our goal – staff will have a thorough understanding of the unique needs and special concerns of the residents managing cognitive deficits. Areas of education include, but are not limited to:
- Defining Alzheimer’s / Dementia and its disease process.
- How Alzheimer’s / Dementia is diagnosed.
- Signs and Symptoms of an individual with Alzheimer’s / Dementia.
- Providing assistance with daily living activities.
- Importance of a calm and quiet environment.
- Managing and negotiating combative behaviors.
- Prevention of agitation.
- Wandering behaviors.
- Sleeplessness and Sundowners.
- Managing challenging behaviors.
